Following service in the United States Army Signal Corps, he received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1958 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Fleckenstein was employed for over thirty years as a photographic research scientist in the Eastman Kodak Research Laboratories, obtaining patents in color photography, instant photography, and graphic arts. He also was a contributing author to The Theory of the Photographic Process, Fourth Edition.
