Matthew C. Van Vessem is a partner in the Firm's Labor & Employment practice group.  His areas of concentration include labor & employment matters, wage and hour laws, employee discipline, public sector collective bargaining, civil service law and municipal law. Mr. Van Vessem serves both private and public sector clients. Mr. Van Vessem formerly served as Assistant Corporation Counsel, City of Buffalo Department of Law.

Experience:

Mr. Van Vessem has represented private and public sector clients in administrative and legal proceedings, including labor arbitrations, agency hearings as well as State and Federal court litigation. Mr. Van Vessem has extensive Appellate Court practice and has represented municipalities before the New York State Court of Appeals on public sector employment issues.

He has lectured or written on a number of topics of particular interest to municipalities, including the application of the Fair Labor Standards Act to municipal employers and the special rules applicable to public sector police and fire employees.

Mr. Van Vessem is a member of the Bar Association of Erie County and the Organization of Public Employment Negotiators.
