As New York State completes its regulatory due diligence, businesses in all sectors are considering how this new industry may shape their strategic growth plan. Executive leaders of local companies were invited to attend a discussion focused on the business aspects of drilling and the opportunities/   The event was held on Tuesday, November 29th from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, 1300 Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo.

Featuring John Norquist, Former Mayor of Milwaukee

John Norquist's work promoting New Urbanism as an alternative to sprawl draws on his experience as big-city mayor and prominent participation in national discussions on urban design and school reform. John served as the Mayor of Milwaukee from 1988-2004. Under his leadership, Milwaukee experienced a decline in poverty, saw a boom in new downtown housing, and became a leading center of education and welfare reform. He oversaw a revision of the city's zoning code and reoriented development around walkable streets and public amenities such as the city's 3.1-mile Riverwalk, earning the distinction of "Public Official of the Year" from Governing magazine during his tenure. He has served as a member of the architecture and urban planning faculty at multiple universities and is the author of The Wealth of Cities.

Jaeckle Hosts Tom Murphy, Former Mayor of Pittsburgh

Mr. Murphy currently serves as a senior resident fellow for the Urban Land Institute (ULI) specializing in public policy, retail/urban entertainment, transportation/infrastructure, housing, real estate finance and environmental issues. Since 2006 he has served as ULI's gulf coast liaison helping the leadership and public of New Orleans to advance rebuilding recommendations made by ULI. Prior to serving as a ULI fellow, Mr. Murphy served three terms as the mayor of Pittsburgh.


New York Government Reorganization and Citizen Empowerment Act:
What Municipal Leaders Need to Know

The New York Government Reorganization and Citizen Empowerment Act became effective on March 21, 2010.   The Act creates new Article 17-A of the General Municipal Law governing the consolidation and dissolution of most (but not all) forms of local government.  The  new law has raised at least as many questions as it has provided answers.
